Art schools anyone?

Journal Entry: Wed Jul 1, 2009, 8:25 AM
Question.

The Savannah College of art and design (Scad) has always been my first choice when it came to choosing an art school for graduate studies. I've already been accepted but I decided to take my undergrad courses at another school before I attended ( to save money lol).I'm a junior now so I need to start getting more serious about my portfolio and shizz no more fooling about...*sigh*

But I was just wondering what art school did you go to and why?
Plus does anyone go to scad and how awesome is it?!

Here's some pros and cons.

CONS:

1)Campus is spread all across downtown so there's no real campus and thus socializing with people outside your major is a little difficult.

2)EXPENSIVE, So you better be sure what major/minor you want to get into.

3) For the price, you might wonder if you'd be better off learning on your own or going to cheaper colleges.

PROS:

1) From my own experiences in the Sequential Art Department it's a very close-knit group and you can get to know your professors real well.

2) Excellent transportation system overall considering how much area it covers.

3) Having an environment suited for artists is really cool and you get to meet some cool people who want to do the same things as you, which is a big plus for comic artists since they tend to be a scattered, inclimate sort of people (i.e. myself).

Hope that helps, I did really enjoy my time at SCAD and I made some great friends, it's just a difficult decision in my mind if you're going to get into debt for it.

Thank you for telling me about that very helpful. Like I knew the campus was very widespread but I didn't know the transportation was that awesome. I just hope the animation department is the same. I want to become a storyboard artist or character designer so i'm glad the professors are one on one and it is a great community of people helping you achieve your goal.
Plus i'm also wondering about the debt thing lol:)

yeah, the price can be a big deal for a lot of students. Fortunately, I was able to get some scholarships to help me out. If you can do the same, I'd highly recommend it. If you plan on doing storyboarding and character design, then you may spend more time with the sequential art department. However, I'm not certain of this because last I heard, SCAD changed around some major curriculums.

Though, I wouldn't say the transportation is awesome, but it'll get you where you need to be the majority of the time. If you can, try and schedule classes to where you know the buildings are close by, atleast close enough that you can speedwalk to, because it's not always reliable.

Well then that sounds like a plan! I was kind of guessing that that the sequential arts department would be the area I spent most of my time and I also heard about the curriculum changes not much though. Now to look into some scholarships and buy a bike.

I just graduated from Sheridan College which is in Ontario and took classical animation there. Apparently it has/had a worldwide reputation for being awesome. However even though I made some great friends, the place wasn't as phenomenal as I had expected it to be. I learned there that the school does not define you and make you an artist. You get better on your own accord. The artists who excel are the ones who love it and do it in their spare time and want to get better. Only a handful of teachers from there were helpful. Wherever you choose to go, you are the one who is responsible for your own growth.

Very true, I guess because I feel as though I haven't really had any formal training within my career choice as an animator (story boarding specifically)or any real art courses at that I feel a bit behind and kind of scared with the whole choosing a school deal.
But you're absolutely right and I'm glad you said it, practice and devotion makes perfect and the school will only be a portion of my future success. I'm actually very inspired right about now, thank you.:)
